A mala is a string of beads, which many Buddhists used when reciting a mantra. It is a practical and at the same time is full of symbolism.
When we understand that there is no ego, and have experienced the great joy it brings such an embodiment, the qualities that we get is practically as various actions or activities of a bodhisattva.
When using the bad, you say the mantra for each account. One broken thumb clockwise on each account and when you get to the account stupa, one bad and still rotates back down that road. This makes poor use easier, because the accounts are not really pressed the cord when the move.
